Cheapest Insurance Rates for Small SUVs – 2015 to 2024 Model Years

Small SUVs and crossovers are the fastest growing vehicle class in America, with over 40% of new car sales being one of these models. Insurance cost on these little utility vehicles can differ by as much as $650 a year, so it can pay off to know which models are on the cheaper end of the insurance cost spectrum.

We took all models from 2015 to 2024 (luxury models excluded) and pulled out the top 10 cheapest small SUVs to insure for each model year. From 2015 to 2023, the number of models in the class grew from 29 to 47, demonstrating the popularity of the segment.

2024 Model Year Winner – Subaru Crosstrek

For the 2024, the cheapest compact SUV to insure is the Subaru Crosstrek, at $1,772 per year or around $148 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 47 small SUVs for the 2024 model year, which have an average segment cost of $2,206.

Ranking in second and third place for 2024 are the Chevrolet Trailblazer, costing $1,804 per year, and the Kia Soul at $1,872.

2023 Model Year Winner – Chevrolet Trailblazer

For the 2023 model year, the cheapest SUV to insure is the Chevrolet Trailblazer, costing around $1,762 per year or $147 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 47 small SUVs for the 2023 model year, which average $2,123 as a whole.

Second and third place honors for the cheapest insurance for 2023 models go to the Subaru Crosstrek, costing $1,782 per year, and the Nissan Kicks at $1,788 annually.

2022 Model Year Winner – Mazda CX-5

For the 2022 model year, the cheapest SUV to insure is the Mazda CX-5, costing around $1,668 per year or $139 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 45 small SUVs for the 2022 model year, which average $2,029 as a whole.

Second and third place honors for the cheapest insurance for 2022 models go to the Nissan Kicks, costing $1,706 per year, and the Chevrolet Trailblazer at $1,718 annually.

2021 Model Year Winner – Mazda CX-3

Car insurance rates for the 2021 Mazda CX-3 cost around $1,664 per year or $139 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 41 small SUVs for the 2021 model year, which average $1,936 as a whole.

Second and third place honors for the cheapest insurance for 2021 models go to the Honda CR-V, costing $1,730 per year, and the Mazda CX-5 at $1,752 annually.

2020 Model Year Winner – Mazda CX-3

Insurance rates for the 2020 Mazda CX-3 cost an average of $1,616 per year or $135 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 37 small SUVs for the 2020 model year, which average $1,879 across the whole segment.

Coming in second and third place for the cheapest car insurance for 2020 models go to the Honda CR-V, costing $1,678 per year, and the Mazda CX-5 at $1,700 annually.

2019 Model Year Winner – Ford Ecosport

Insurance rates for the 2019 Ford Ecosport cost around $1,480 per year or $123 per month for a full coverage policy. It takes top ranking out of 34 small SUVs for the 2019 model year, which average $1,797 as a whole.

Ranking second and third for 2019 models are the Toyota C-HR, costing $1,482 per year, and the Jeep Compass at $1,542 annually.

2018 Model Year Winner – Ford Ecosport

Insurance rates for the 2018 Ford Ecosport cost an estimated $1,412 per year or $118 per month. It ranks number one out of 33 small SUVs for the 2018 model year, which average $1,689 as a whole.

The 2018 first and second place runner-up models are the Nissan Kicks, costing $1,442 per year, and the Toyota C-HR at $1,448 annually.

2017 Model Year Winner – Honda CR-V

The 2017 Honda CR-V costs an average of $1,438 per year or $120 per month to insure for full coverage. It beat out a total of 30 small SUVs for the 2017 model year, which average $1,664 as a whole.

The next two cheapest 2017 model year small SUVs to insure are the Mazda CX-3, costing $1,442 per year, and the Subaru Crosstrek at $1,456 annually.

2016 Model Year Winner – Subaru Crosstrek

The cost to insure the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek comes in at around $1,340 per year or $112 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 28 small SUVs for the 2016 model year, which average $1,557 per year.

Placing second and third for 2016 models are the Honda CR-V, costing $1,382 per year, and the Buick Encore at $1,410 annually.

2015 Model Year Winner – Mazda CX-5

Car insurance rates for the 2015 Mazda CX-5 cost around $1,264 per year or $105 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 28 small SUVs for the 2015 model year, which average $1,492 as a whole.
