Small SUVs and crossovers are the fastest growing vehicle class in America, with over 40% of new car sales being one of these models. Insurance cost on these little utility vehicles can differ by as much as $650 a year, so it can pay off to know which models are on the cheaper end of the insurance cost spectrum.
We took all models from 2015 to 2024 (luxury models excluded) and pulled out the top 10 cheapest small SUVs to insure for each model year. From 2015 to 2023, the number of models in the class grew from 29 to 47, demonstrating the popularity of the segment.
2024 Model Year Winner – Subaru Crosstrek
For the 2024, the cheapest compact SUV to insure is the Subaru Crosstrek, at $1,772 per year or around $148 per month for full coverage. It ranks number one out of 47 small SUVs for the 2024 model year, which have an average segment cost of $2,206.
Ranking in second and third place for 2024 are the Chevrolet Trailblazer, costing $1,804 per year, and the Kia Soul at $1,872.

Second and third place honors for the cheapest insurance for 2023 models go to the Subaru Crosstrek, costing $1,782 per year, and the Nissan Kicks at $1,788 annually.
