2023 Honda Civic vs. Average Vehicle by Insurance Coverage

The data shows that for physical damage coverages (comprehensive and collision), the 2024 Civic will save some money over the average rates. This is generally due to below-average collision repair costs for the Civic.

Liability and medical costs are a different story, however, and you’ll give a little back for those coverages. Based on these numbers, the Civic has a tendency to have higher or more frequent liability and occupant medical claims than the average 2024 model.

What is the cheapest Honda Civic insurance?

The cheapest 2024 Honda Civic to insure is the $23,950 LX trim level costing an average of $1,502 per year. Generally, as the trim level increases (along with the vehicle’s MSRP), the cost of car insurance also increases.

The second cheapest Civic to insure is the LX Hatchback at $1,530, and the third cheapest trim level is the Sport at $1,548 per year.

The table below shows the annual, semi-annual, and monthly costs for insuring the different trims and styles of Civics available, with the most expensive being the Type R at $1,992 per year.

Honda Civic Insurance Cost by Trim Level

As mentioned earlier, as the cost of a Civic increases, so does the cost of car insurance. The table above illustrates this pretty well, as the higher-priced trim levels have significantly higher car insurance rates than the cheapest LX model.

The higher insurance rates on more expensive Civic models are due to the fact that it would cost a car insurance company more to replace them if they were totaled as compared to the cheaper models.

Anything that can potentially cost an insurance company more money will always translate into higher car insurance rates for the consumer.

Thus, consumers must weigh the benefits of higher-end Civics against the potential costs of higher insurance premiums.

What is the best insurance for a Honda Civic?

In a comparison of large U.S. insurance companies, Progressive had the cheapest average rates on a 2024 Honda Civic at $1,446 per year, followed by GEICO at $1,512 and Safeco at $1,547.

State Farm, Farmers Insurance, and Liberty Mutual rates tended to be a little higher on average for a 2024 Civic as shown in the chart below.

Keep in mind these are average rates, and the trim level of your Civic does impact rates as we discussed earlier. Just because the State Farm average rate is higher than Progressive, GEICO, and Safeco, that doesn’t necessarily mean their prices will be that much more expensive on a specific Civic trim.

Also, there are many insurance companies that either don’t sell nationwide and instead focus on smaller regional territories that may have cheaper rates than even Progressive and GEICO. Erie Insurance is an example of a regional company, as they primarily sell insurance in the upper midwest and eastern U.S. states.

There are also companies like USAA that are not available to everyone. USAA only sells car insurance to veterans, active military, and their family members and usually has some of the cheapest insurance rates. So if you are a veteran or in the military, definitely check out USAA.

In the end, finding the best insurance for a Honda Civic isn’t necessarily all about price. Excellent claims service may be a higher priority for you than the cheapest price. Or having a local agent to discuss your coverages with may also be a priority that may not be available from every company.

The best insurance is often a balance between price, customer service, and claims handling.

Honda Civic insurance cost for teenage drivers

Average car insurance rates for teenagers on a 2024 Honda Civic range from a low of $3,940 per year for a 19-year-old female driver to a high of $5,852 for a 16-year-old male driver.

Honda Civic insurance for a 17-year-old driver costs an average of $5,675 for males and $5,438 for females. After turning 18, insurance rates drop a little, averaging $5,101 for males and $4,704 for females.

Why is Honda Civic insurance so high? It’s not just the Civic that has expensive car insurance for teens. Any vehicle that has a teenager insured as the rated driver will have extremely high insurance rates. Teens are inexperienced, easily distracted at the wheel, and have the highest frequency of accidents of any age group.

The Civic is a popular car for teenage drivers because it’s affordable, has a great selection of aftermarket mods, and receives good safety ratings.

In fact, the 2023 Honda Civic is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award winner, which is the highest rating given by the organization.

The chart below shows average Honda Civic car insurance rates for teenage drivers aged 16 through 19, both male and female.

A good way to reduce the cost of insurance for teenagers is to either buy an older model-year Civic or insure with liability coverage only.

As an example, insuring an 18-year-old driver on a 2014 Honda Civic with full coverage averages $3,335 per year instead of $5,101 for a new 2024 model.

Dropping full coverage makes a significant dent in the cost of car insurance. For the same 2014 Honda Civic and 18-year-old driver with liability-only coverage, the rate drops to $1,567 per year for 100/300/100 split-limit coverage.

To get the cheapest Honda Civic insurance possible, which is not necessarily recommended, you can insure with the minimum liability insurance required in your state. It varies for each state, but it can be inadequate protection for a lot of drivers.

Liability insurance is pretty cheap coverage for the protection it provides, so this is one area we don’t recommend skimping on.
