Spun off from the Dodge brand in 2010, the Ram Trucks brand now produces pickups and utility vans from its Warren and Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Saltillo, Mexico, assembly plants.
With the price of a new Ram Truck able to surpass $90,000, will drivers be able to fit the cost of insurance into their monthly budget?
Let’s take a look at the average cost to insure the different Ram models and see how they compare to the competition.
How much does Ram insurance cost?
At an average cost of $2,004 per year for 2023 models, Ram insurance ranges from $1,758 a year for a Ram Promaster up to $2,222 per year for the Ram Truck 3500.
The U.S. national average car insurance rate is $1,728 per year, so the average cost to insure Ram vehicles costs 14.8% more.
The table below breaks out average annual and monthly auto insurance cost for the different Ram models.
Model | Annual Cost | Monthly Cost |
---|---|---|
Ram Promaster | $1,758 | $147 |
Ram Promaster City 2022 and prior model years | $1,368 | $114 |
Ram Tradesman 2015 and prior model years | $1,104 | $92 |
Ram Truck | $1,982 | $165 |
Ram Truck 2500 | $2,054 | $171 |
Ram Truck 3500 | $2,222 | $185 |
How does Ram insurance compare to Ford and Chevy?
When compared to its top two competitors, Ram insurance is 10.8% more expensive per year than Chevy and 9.3% more expensive than Ford.
GMC is also a competitor along with Nissan and its Titan and Titan XD line of trucks and the NV series of vans. Ram insurance costs an average of 6.4% more than GMC and 12.1% more than Nissan.
The next chart visualizes the comparison between Ram insurance cost and the Chevrolet, GMC, Ford, and Nissan brands.
Keep in mind, however, than when comparing brands, all models are included in the overall average cost. So for Chevy, Ford, GMC and Nissan, their average rates are influenced by smaller, cheaper models like the Chevrolet Trax, Ford EcoSport, GMC Terrain, and Nissan Kicks.
Ram is just pickup trucks and vans, so it makes more sense in this case to compare rates for specific models rather than for a brand as a whole.
The next table includes a full list of automakers and compares the average cost to insure each one to the cost to insure a Ram vehicle.

As to be expected, Ram insurance costs less than most of the luxury automakers. For mainstream non-luxury brands, however, average Ram insurance costs more.
As mentioned before, though, keep in mind that the other brands have small cars and compact SUVs that have cheap insurance rates. Ram does not, so it’s not really an apples-to-apples comparison.
