Why do lower deductibles cost more?

A deductible is the amount of money you have to pay in the event your insurance company pays for a covered physical damage claim (think weather, animal collision, overturn, accident, etc.).

If you choose a lower deductible when you purchase your policy, that means your insurance company will pay more for a claim. This makes it more expensive to insure your Maxima.

Conversely, if you opt to shoulder more of the cost of a claim; i.e., a higher deductible, your insurance company will respond by charging you a lower amount for physical damage coverage.

It’s tempting to choose low deductibles because they mean less money out-of-pocket at claim time, but if your claim frequency is low, you will end up paying much more than if you opted for the higher deductible and pocketed the savings.
