As the largest premium automotive manufacturer in the world, the German-based Mercedes-Benz has an extensive history, dating back to 1926.

It was in that year when the Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft and Benz Patent-Motorwagen companies teamed up to produce the first Mercedes-Benz brand vehicle, under the Daimler-Benz flag.

After producing primarily military products until well after World War II, Daimler-Benz entered the U.S. automobile market in 1958 with the Studebaker brand. Mercedes-Benz USA was founded in 1965, and the U.S. market was introduced to the iconic 300SL Gullwing model.

Since then, many models have come and gone from showroom floors, but Mercedes quality still reflects their original slogan, “the best or nothing”.

Is it expensive to buy insurance for a Mercedes-Benz?

Considering the average cost of car insurance in the U.S. is $2,221 per year, and the average cost to insure a Mercedes is $3,386, drivers can expect to pay around $1,165 more more per year to insure a Mercedes than the average vehicle.

Mercedes does have some of the more expensive car insurance rates, but does compare fairly well to the other luxury German brands. For example, Mercedes car insurance cost averages 11.3% more per year than Audi, 9.8% more than BMW, 5.2% less than Porsche, but a whopping 43% more than the non-luxury Volkswagen brand.

When compared to non-German luxury brands, Mercedes insurance cost doesn’t compare quite as well. Compared to Lexus, Mercedes insurance rates are 26.2% more per year. When compared to Acura and Infiniti, Mercedes insurance rates are 42.4% more and 31.8% more per year, respectively.

The chart below shows how average auto insurance cost for Mercedes vehicles ranks against other luxury brands. Mercedes is the orange bar on the left at $3,386 per year, while the luxury competitors are shown alphabetically to the right in blue.

Data Methodology: Average car insurance rates include all Mercedes-Benz, Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus, and Volvo vehicles for the 2024 model year. Rated driver is a 40-year-old married male with no driving violations or at-fault accidents for the prior three years. Comprehensive and collision deductibles are $500, UM/UIM and medical payments coverages are included, and rates are averaged for all U.S. states.

It’s easy to see that Mercedes has some of the higher car insurance rates for luxury brands. It’s similar, yet higher, than the German Audi and BMW brands, but is considerably more than the Japanese Acura and Lexus brands. General Motors’ Cadillac brand and the Swedish Volvo brand are the cheapest of the bunch.

The next table takes the comparison one step further, and compares Mercedes-Benz car insurance cost to a wider variety of brands, not just luxury automakers. Included in the comparison are mainstream brands like Ford, Chevrolet, Honda, Toyota, and Nissan.

The difference column shows how much cheaper (green) or more expensive (red) car insurance costs on average for each brand when compared to Mercedes-Benz.

Average cost of Mercedes-Benz insurance ($3,386 per year) compared to other automotive manufacturers

Due to the lack of red difference values, it’s pretty safe to say that Mercedes vehicles have some of the more expensive car insurance rates on average.

However, this is not to say that every Mercedes model has expensive insurance. In fact, some models are quite affordable within their luxury segments.

Since we use an average cost across all models, models like the Maybach S580, AMG S63, and AMG GT that cost anywhere from $153,000 to $325,000 definitely have more expensive insurance rates. This skews the average upward since some other luxury brands do not offer models at such high price points.
